The New Orleans Saints are World Champions defeating the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in Miami last night. It is the first Super Bowl Championship for the Saints who made the big plays at Sun Life Stadium in front of millions of people watching the game around the world.
It was not too long ago that the New Orleans Saints were known more as the 'Aints' than the Who Dat Saints America has become familiar with this season. The Saints could just have easily been playing in another city following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. But the city rallied around the team and after $185 million was poured into the Superdome the Saints reopened their stadium in an emotional Monday Night Football win over the Atlanta Falcons on September 25, 2006.
Out of one of the darkest times in American history, a team and a city joined together in a way that is rarely witnessed in sports. It is rare to hear players talk about bringing home a championship to their city in the way that Drew Brees & Co. have been saying all week. Now they will be able to crown New Orleans' re-building efforts with a gleaming Lombardi Trophy.
So New Orleans, this one's for you. Of all the cities I can think of that deserve a championship, you top the list.
