Manchester United Sign The Little Pea & Are On Brink of USA Sumer Tour
Charlie Klein
First things first, on behalf of Red Devils Nation, I would like to welcome Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez to Manchester United. ESPN Soccernet reported yesterday that Manchester United paid six million pounds for the 21 year-old Mexican international. Hernandez becomes the first Mexican player to sign for United in the club's history.
Having spent zero time watching the Mexican league or the Mexican National Team, I cannot say with any sort of authority whether or not Hernandez will be a success at United. From the YouTube videos I have seen, he looks pretty good. Then again, YouTube videos also make Shola Ameobi look like a world-beater (sorry Dave from Newcastle).
He is not a commanding presence in the final 18, being only 5'9", but shows great pace and attacking nous. Chicharito, Spanish for the little pea, has notched four goals in as many appearances for the national team. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson commented on the Manchester United website that he was at first inclined to wait to purchase Hernandez.
"One of our scouts went to Mexico in December and watched a few games - the reports that came back were very good. At that time we thought we'd just wait because he was only young. But then he came into the national team and that created a potential problem; if he went to the World Cup and did well at the tournament then we could be in danger of losing him."
In their report on United's latest signing, Yahoo!Sports reported that Manchester United is "finalizing details of a tour of the United States in July." If such a tour is on the cards, it is worth all six million pounds paid to get Chicharito (it was a part of his deal that United play a match at Guadalajara's new stadium this summer). I have only watched United play once, the last time they were in the States in 2003. If they do come out again this summer, you can count on me going.
