Mark Sanchez Too Big of a Reach for the Jets

John Quirk

First there is David Hassel, I mean Mark Sanchez, star quarterback from the university of awesome in southern California. Here is a kid who played on what amounts to a college all-star team for 16 games and now has been handed the reigns (and a contract with 5 years and $28 mil guaranteed) to the New York Jets. It’s no secret that the Pac-10 is an offense first league with emphasis on fast, big wideouts, and great quarterback play. Yet as for defense, few if any Pac-10 defenders crack the draft, let alone making and impact in the league. This year there has been stronger representation by the Pac-10 as a whole, sending 32 players directly into the NFL via the draft, yet 11 were Trojans… they also had 3 of the first 4 first rounder’s. A point, it needs a point, ok the point is I don’t believe Mark Sanchez has done or seen enough to warrant such a stretch by such an important team. The Jets are NFL history, responsible for the merger and representing (even if not playing in) the biggest sports market in the world and it has now been risked on 16 collegiate games against less than average college defenses. One of the few times Sanchez played against pro talent and a pro coach it was against Notre Dame last year, a game the Trojans won 38-3, where Sanchez faced Tom Zbikowski, a special teamer on the Baltimore Ravens and Charlie Wise ex-robin to Bill Belichick. It was also a game where Sanchez threw 2 picks.
