I know this may not be really sports related but I thought this was funny. How does one celebrate being the most expensive player in football history? Well, if you’re Cristiano Ronaldo how bout one night in Paris Hilton. After being transferred from Manchester United to Real Madrid for a world record fee of $131 million (80 million pounds; 93 million euro), Ronaldo was seen taking part in the walk of shame out of Paris’ place.
How does this happen? First Ronaldo was hanging out late night at a club. Second, don’t ask me how I know this, but Paris Hilton had broken up with boyfriend #926. Third, Ronaldo was hanging out in Los Angeles. This is foreign territory for the Portuguese ace, so clearly he needed a tour guide. Paris being Paris clearly was acting as a Good Samaritan and Ronaldo being Ronaldo was clearly being himself. Add all these things up and this hookup is no longer weird but a perfect synopsis of why Ronaldo for all his talents really is better off not being a Manchester United player.
Now I’m not a hater and this is probably the 100th post explaining why Manchester United will be better off without him. Clearly he’ll be a huge loss; after all he is the current world player of the year and is part of the triumvirate of world greatest players. Leo Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka are those three players if you had no idea. But Paris Hilton is more than just a tabloid hookup but a metaphor for Ronaldo’s ambitions. Manchester United is that girl who is absolutely beautiful but isn’t hung up on her looks because she has developed a great personality. Manchester United is the girl you marry and you’re thankfully that you did. She may not be flashy but she is steady and in the long run the better choice. Real Madrid much like Paris Hilton is fun short term. Sure she’s rich and guaranteed to bring you attention when you’re with her. It really is a matter of flash vs. substance.
Ronaldo will be paid lavishly and probably enjoy it the whole time. I mean Madrid is definitely on the outside a more enjoyable city than Manchester, after all they have sunshine. For what Manchester lacks in beaches it has made up for in titles. Now Real Madrid is no slouch either but recently United is at least the number 2 club in the world. The number 1 club plays in the same league as Real Madrid. So for all the outside riches Ronaldo has just inherited he has given up a chance to be part of a special generation of talented footballers at Manchester United. United is at a crossroad. They were on the verge of being the first club to win back-to-back Champions Leagues in its current format. Knowing Sir Alex Ferguson he was able to mold the team after Eric Cantona and David Beckham both left the club. Now we’ll see if he can do it again.
Here are 3 players United should look at with club name in parenthesis:
1) Antonio Valencia (Wigan)
2) Karim Benzema (Lyon)
3) Alexandre Pato (AC Milan)
