The 2009 Champions League Final: A United Supporter's Perspective

Charlie Klein

For some reason the direction of my life will be altered on May 27, 2009. My favourite sports team, Manchester United, is playing the the European Club Championship final against FC Barcelona in what for all parties involved promises to be an epic final.

This is a team that has been matchless for the past three years in England and for the last two on the continent. United feature all-world players such as Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rio Ferdinand, and Edwin Van Der Sar. Not only is the team studded with stars but also with the all world leadership of one of the greatest players to ever lace up a pair of boots in Ryan Giggs. So why should I feel nervous?

There are three reasons.

1. It is only natural as a fan to feel nervous for a big game. During the Rangers NHL Playoff run in 2007 I would feel physically sick with nerves on game days.

2. I have nothing else to think about.

3. We are playing a damn good team. Barcelona have lit up the Primera this season and possess an incredible amount of talent in their squad. United killer Theirry Henry will always scare me even if he was 46 years old. The midfield of Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, and Yaya Toure has the firepower as well as the strength to maintain possession throughout most of any game. They also have Lionel Messi. Did I mention him already? He is only second to Ronaldo in my mind in terms of best footballer on the planet.

What calms me?

United are the best team in the world and Barcelona are missing three out of their four starting defenders.

There will be more coming down the pipeline in the build up to the final.
